to run or not to run?

So remember that time when I had to stop running because my body was basically starting a revolution against itself?  Yeah.  Well, I've kinda been toying with the idea of running again.  I just felt like I had really accomplished something after every run.  Ughh.  I don't know what to do.  John suggested getting orthodics(not sure how to spell it and spellcheck says it's wrong?).  He thinks that will cut down on the pain.  I think I really just want to run because it's starting to get nice outside (OK, so today it was nice outside) and again with the accomplishment thing.  I don't have a regular workout routine and have kind of gotten into a funk.  Must decide something soon.  Should I compromise my knees/shins/ankles?  Will the pain eventually subside?  Last time I was regularly running for around 5 months and once the pain would subside in one area another started acting up.  Lots of people run, why can't I run?  Experienced runners out there, help me out, does the pain go away?  Or should I just give up and find something else to do?  It would probably help if I wasn't so cheap and would actually join a gym.  I did that once in college and eventually came up with a mound of excuses as to why I couldn't go.  Help!

Why do you want to run? Some reasons people give for wanting to run include, but may not apply to your situation: 1. want to lose weight, 2. want to get better at running, 3. improve cardiovascular fitness, 4. become more healthy overall. For me personally I am more interested in becoming more fit (to be more healthy) and I don't really care if that's through running or some other activity.

Although I don't buy into their whole cult-like following, the NerdFitness blog has some good stuff in my opinion, including a great piece about why interval training is much more time effective than just running. http://nerdfitness.com/blog/2009/01/27/kick-your-ass-and-kickstart-your-metabolism-in-20-minutes/

Basically my workout plan for the spring is to alternate that interval training running thing with their starting body weight workout plan which doesn't need any fancy equipment: http://nerdfitness.com/blog/2009/12/09/beginner-body-weight-workout-burn-fat-build-muscle/

I'll let you know how it goes, but good luck with whatever you end up doing.

Hey Jessi! I stumbled upon your blog by way of Emily's blog:) Hope you don't mind me commenting! As for running...I'm basically addicted. Ran my first 10k when I was junior in college and have been hooked ever since. The best advice I can give you is this: take baby steps. Literally. It's easy to become eager and over zealous in the beginning but that's when your run the highest risk of injury. Of course I've had my fair share of aches and pains over the years but have managed to run consistently through them by taking enough "rest" days. It's hard on your joints if you run consecutive days back-to-back...especially if you haven't been running for a while. Also-asphalt is softer than concrete and the treadmill, though boring, provides even more cushion. Of course a little ibuprofen never hurts either:) Happy trails!

basically all four reasons are my reasons for running. i like it because it's an exercise that you can do no matter where you are and it's free(!). thank you for the links, i'm definitely going to check them out! let me know how it goes for you and i'm sure i'll be posting stuff on here about whatever i decide to do.

Ok well you know I DO NOT run. I was running for several months and then had issues with pain. I didn't even like it that much. BUT I did notice I was in better shape. I honestly think that are runners and non-runners. I am the latter and have accepted it. I know for a fact you can get just as much accomplished and not have so many problems with pain/joints if you walk briskly. So maybe find an alternative to running that will get the same thing accomplished....sorry if this is not encouraging you, but you know what I mean. :)

Thanks Heather, I appreciate that! I'm pretty sure I'll end up doing a rigorous walking thing. The injuries are just crazy from running. We shall see...
